Dooars is far away from urban madness. It will come fresh but remote for those coming for the first time.Lying in the Himalayan foothills it is a place where you can enjoy the whole beauty of northbengal. The weather is most beautiful in monsoon and warm days. Dooars is the gateway to Bhutan and the northeastern states of India. Dooars is famous for its rich biodiversity and forests. Dooars is a cultural melting pot. The original inhabitants of the area include forest dwellers such as the Mech and Rava. The area was the kingdom of Cooch kings and has substantial number of Rajbanshis or Kamtapuris living here.

Attraction in Dooars:

Neora Valley National Park: It is situated in the kalimpong and located in a woody forest area near lava.This is a most popular picnic spot because its pollution free area. Its floral diversity is noteworthy with mixed species of rhododendrons, bamboo, sal etc. along with several species of orchids. The faunal diversity is also rich with species like common leopard, clouded leopard, Himalayan Thar, black bear, civet and red panda to name a few, but it is most famous for its rich diversity of birds and is a major attraction for bird-watchers.

Gorumara National Park: It is situated on the banks of river murti.The most enjoable things are you can see here rhinos and bisons huddle togethrt to lick salt. Methla Watchtower is located at Kalipur eco village near Ramsai on the eastern fringe of Gorumara National Park. There are unique Bullok cart driven forest safari available here.

Bindu: Bindu is only 107 km from Siliguri.Bindu is a conglomeration of different aborigines. The peace loving people of Bindu are engaged either in Elaichi or Suntala cultivation. Bindu offers several short treks in the lower Kalimpong hills. The most popular one starts from Todey to Tangta and leads towards Nerora Valley National Park.

Jaldapara Wild Life Sanctuary: The Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at the foothill of Eastern Himalayas on the bank of river Torsa in West Bengal. The vast grassland with patches of riverine forests was declared a sanctuary in 1943 for protection of the great variety of flora and fauna. This wildlife forest has the largest concentration of the endangered Asiatic one horned Rhinoceros in India after Kaziranga.

Samsing: With its orange orchards and cardamom plantations, Samsing is an unspoilt mountain destination that is growing in popularity among tourists.The speciality of tea is most pleasurable.

Murti: Murti is a place which offers you eco friendly accomodation where you can feel a peaceful evening and listening to the music of woods and water when the sun goes down.

Murti is the name of a river flowing down from the Kalimpong hills. Murti as a place is situated besides the river between the Chapramari forest and Gorumara National Park. The place has come into prominance as a large number of private and government tourist accommodations are located here. The West Bengal Forest Development Corporatation has its forest bungalow “Banani” at Murti.

The possibility of catching a glimpse of wild animals like bison, deer, peacock and even leopard is great from the Jatraprasad watchtower. Lataguri is just 20 minutes drive from Murti. While Lataguri getting more and more conjusted and crowded, Murti on the other hand offers a calm and peaceful stay in the forest surroundings.

What to See at Murti:

Lataguri: Lataguri is a small town located in the Jalpaiguri district of Indian state of West Bengal. The village is located outside the Gorumara National Park on National Highway No. 31. Permits for entering Gorumara and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary are given from Lataguri. The village is one of the entry points of the park and one can visit the Nature Interpretation Center that is located here. You can get information on the various varieties of flora and fauna in the center.

Chalsa: Chalsa is a small town situated just on the foot of the Himalayas in the Duars in Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. This small town is surrounded by hills, tea gardens, rivers and forests. Chalsa is the administrative headquarters of the Matiali community development block of the Malbazar subdivision of Jalpaiguri District. Surrounded by hills, tea gardens, free flowing streams and dense forests, the town was called Queen of Duars during the British regime.

You can also visit the interior of Gorumara National Park staying at Murti. On the other side of the river at a short distance is Panjhora river.

The most famous destination in Dooars is Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in Alipurduar Sub-division of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal near India – Bhutan boarder. The park has distinct varieties of flora and fauna. Some of the animals that are found in the park are one horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, sambar deer, and spotted deer, barking deer, wild pig, hog deer and bison. There a many species of birds that are present here as well and these include many varieties of eagles such as crested eagle and fishing eagle.

Elephant rides are the most important activity in the park and this is extremely popular among the visitors. You can go into the depths of the jungle and it can be a phenomenal experience. Safaris are also available in the park and these are a good way to see the length and breadth of the place.

Travel Around at Jaldapara:

Chilapata

Hidden deep inside the Chilapata Forests the ruins of a thousand yeas old fort of Nal King has a tremendous historical and archeological importance. On way to Cooch Behar, a trip through the deep and dark Chilapata Forest (20 km from Alipurduar) is a pleasant and exciting experience. Built in the 5th century during the Gupta Empire the ruins still recall the memories of the Golden Age of India.

Toto Para

It lies quite close to the sanctuary and is the only settlement of the Totos tribe, which is reckoned as the most endangered tribal community around the globe. There are only around thousand numbers of members of this community. Various steps have been taken by the government so as to enhance the living condition of the community.

Fort of Nal king

The old fort of Nal king lies deep within the Chilapata forest. The forest was built in the 5th century and has a vast archeological importance.

How to Get There:

Air Way: Bagdogra 145kms from Jaldapara is the nearest airport from where tourist can reach Jaldapara by road-route via Siliguri, noted below. (Siliguri to Bagdogra – 13 km).

Rail Way: The most important railway station in the North East India is NJP. NJP is directly connected with all major stations in India.

Road Way: Jaldapara is connected by National Highway with Siliguri and can be reached by car within 3hrs.
