Richenpong is a small hill station situated at an altitude of 1700 m in West Sikkim. This village is an ideal retreat for the people who are fond of getting natural beauty of hills. It is known for its views of the sunrise and sunset and the Himalayas and provides a splendid view of Kanchenjunga. Richenpong has many trekking options with the trek to the forest areas of Khandi Danra/Menlapso being a popular one. Various species of birds can be spotted in the forest. There are also various historical and heritage sites and the Ringsum Monastery to visit.

Richenpong Monastery: Rinchenpong Monastery is situated above the twin villages of Richenpong and Kaluk in West Sikkim. This 18th century monastery is a popular tourist attraction in West Sikkim. The Richenpong Monastery situated amidst lush green mountains and floating clouds. A breathtaking view is one of the attractions of the place. The entrance to the monastery is lined with colorful prayer flags.

 

Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary: The place is famous for the variety of Rhododendron that comes in full bloom during March and April. The Sanctuary is also home for a number of wild animals including the rare Red Panda.

 

 

 

Poison Lake: During the war between the Lepchas and the British, the Lepchas poisoned this lake, because this was the lake from where the British soldiers drank water. Hence it came to be called as the Poison lake.

 

How to reach Richenpong: The best way to reach is by taking a night train or bus to reach New Jalpaiguri station. Then you can avail jeeps from New Jalpaiguri jeeps via Jorethang. The journey is some 130 kms and takes some 5 hours along the banks of Rangeet and Teesta Rivers.

 

Best time to visit Rinchenpong: You can visit Rinchenpong during any time of the year but the mighty Himalayas are beast visible during the winter.

The small village of Tumling located on the renowned Sandakphu. This place offers magnificent views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. This little village is 58km from Darjeeling i.e about 1.5 hours ride and is inhabited by modest village dwellers of the Bhuddhist Sherpa tribe. One is able to see the beautiful Kangchenjunga Range from here and going forward for about 15 minutes one can notice the Mount Everest.

 

 

 

Places to see in Tumling: On a clear night, Tumling offers views of beautifully-lit places like Kurseong, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Pasupati and other settlements. A trek to Dhotrey can also be availed from Tumling and the length of the trek route is some 6 kilometers. You can enjoy the enchanting beauty of the place by opting for sightseeing and exploring the place.

How to Reach Tumling: From Kolkata, you can avail a number of trains and buses in order to reach New Jalpaiguri. From New Jalpaiguri you have to take a hired car to Maneybhanjan. It is advisable to book a car in advance, especially in the peak tourist season, if you are planning to drive to Dhotre or Maneybhanjan from New Jalpaiguri. From Manebhanjan, Tumling can be reached by means of the old Landrover, the only available means of transportation.

Sandakphu is the highest point in West Bengal. This place is known as the best trek destination in Darjeeling Himalaya. The astounding mountain range, the abundant wildlife and the hospitality makes Sandakphu a pleasant place. It refers to the poisonous aconite plants that grow near the peak. It is popular as a trekkers’ paradise. It offers the travelers an excellent view of the Khangchendzonga and the Everest group of mountain peaks in Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan.

Tonglu: Tonglu is the one of the higher peaks of the Singalila Ridge and a small settlement inside the Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling district. It is a preferred destination for trekkers on the way to Sandakphu. Tonglu commands a fine view of the Nepalese Valleys and of the plains of North Bengal. From Tonglu a magnificent view of Kanchanjangha Mass is visible over the undulating slopes of green hills.

Manebhanjan: Manebhanjan is a small village located at an altitude of 7,054 ft. Maneybhanjan is the starting place of any trekking activity to Sandakphu. From Sandakphu one can easily absorb the beautiful view of four peaks – Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhoste. This is virtually the gateway to Singalila and Sandakphu.

Phalut Trek: Phalut is one of the highest peaks of Singalila range and located in Darjeeling district. Phalut is further 21kms from Sandakphu. This place is quite a contrast to the dense forests that are so common at the lower levels.

Kalepokhri: Kalepokhri is just about 8 kms from Sandakphu. It is a village in Nepal situated at an altitude of 3108 m. Being relatively high in altitude and on top of a ridge, there is heavy wind blowing through the village all times of the day. There are a couple of trekkers’ huts here as well. The trek from Tumling to Kalepokhri takes about 5 hours. At Kalepokhri there is a small crystal lake surrounded by pine trees and prayer flags.

Delo is beautiful hill station in North Bengal. Surrounded by lush green forests and gardens, it is 8 Km from Kalimpong. Tea gardens, green lawns and colorful flowering trees adorn the layers of the mountain slopes. The view point from the hill top offers an unforgettable panoramic view of mountainous slopes. Monasteries or Buddhist gumphas form a very important feature of the surrounding and there are three important gumphas  – Tharpa Choling Monastery, Zong Dog Palri Fo-Brang Monastery and Tongsa Gompa that stands witness to the journey of Buddhism in India. There is also the Lepcha Museum & Monastery situated in nearby Big Dhara which showcases everything about the Lepcha community and culture.

Nearby attractions of Delo: The most popular nearby attraction is Lava. Located some 30 km from Kalimpong, Lava is popular for its closeness to Neora Valley National Park. Then there is Pedong, some 20 km from Kalimpong which is a beautiful tiny settlement amidst pine trees, Lolaygaon, which offers some spectacular views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and off course Darjeeling just 56 km from Kalimpong, is often called ‘Queen of Hills’ and is the most popular tourist destination in northeastern India. Other nearby attraction includes Rishop, Kolakham and Reshikhola.

Best time to visit Delo: You can visit Delo, Kalimpong during any time of the year.

How to Reach Delo: Bagdogra airport, located close to Siliguri is the nearest airport and is some 79 km from Kalimpong. From the airport, you can take a taxi to reach Kalimpong. By rail, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station serves Kalimpong and you can easily reach Delo by hiring a taxi from the station.

Gangtok is a bustling, friendly hill station, and the capital of the Himalayan state of Sikkim. The name “Yuksom” means the meeting place of three Lamas. Yuksom is a historical town in Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim district in the Northeast Indian state of Sikkim. For the Bhutia tribal community of Sikkim, Yuksom has special religious and cultural significance.

 

 

 

Yuksum today is an attractive tourist destination and the base for some of the most exciting treks in the region. There are many places of religious and historical interest in the area like the Dubdi and Sangachoeling monasteries, the first to be built in the state. You can also visit the beautiful Khecheopalri Lake considered holy by the Sikkimese. Yuksom is also the entry point of the Khangchendzonga National Park. Yuksom is the base camp for various trekkers and the mountain climbing course organized by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.

Dubdi Monastery

 

Dubdi Monastery: Dubdi Monastery, occasionally called Yuksom Monastery is a Buddhist monastery of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism near Yuksom, in the Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim district. Chenpo’s green image is enshrined in the Dhubdi monastery as it was established by him to commemorate the founding of the Kingdom of Sikkim. It is the only monastery purported now as the first monastery built in Sikkim.

 

 

 

Norbugang Park

 

Norbugang Park: The Norbugang Chorten is situated in the Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim district in the Indian State of Sikkim. This throne is part of the Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit. Norbugang Coronation Throne stands as the witness of the historical event wherein three Lamas met and consecrated the first king of Sikkim.

 

 

Kanchenjunga National Park

 

Kanchenjunga National Park: The Kanchenjunga National Park, now renamed the Khangchendzonga National Park is a wildlife sanctuary and a biosphere reserve in North Sikkim. Spread over an area of 849.5 km, this national park is home to animals like the Musk Deer, Red Panda, Taker and the Himalayan Blue Sheep. Among birds, you can find the Sunbird, Asian Emerald Cuckoo, snow pigeon and the Eagle.
