Dhupjhora is a mid sized village located in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal. It has a population of about 4050 persons living in around 860 households.

Dhupjhora is situated close to River Murti and the on the outskirt of the famous Gorumara National Park is a beautiful and nice settlement. It is also locally known as the ‘Elephant camp’ because of the philkana – elephant stables – located here. If one is nature lover or interested to watch the wild life this is the place where he should be. The Bank of River Murti gives a most spectacular view. Places to see in Dhupjhora: Dhupjhora is located in the South Gorumara Forest Range. The Gorumara Jungle, the adjacent tea gardens, the meandering Murti River, the Tree House and the elephant camp itself are the attractions of Dhupjora.

Dhupjhora Elephant Camp is a unique concept of eco tourism where the tourists get a chance to feed the Forest Department’s elephants, give a bath to them in Murti River and ride on them to the deepest parts of the Gorumara jungle to catch a glimpse of the wildlife. Tourists can also enjoy tribal cultural programs in the evenings, roam around in the tea gardens, visit a carpet factory and laze all day in the bank of River Murti. You can also enjoy staying in a tree house here.

Nearby attractions around Dhupjhora: The entire Dooars range of jungles like Chapramari, Chalsa, Neora Valley, Chukchukia, Jaldapara and others are located nearby. You can also travel upto Bindu, Jhalong, Samsing, Suntaleykhola, Paren and other areas near the Dooars.

Things to do in Dhupjhora: From the top of tower guest can get a panoramic view of almost the entire park, Banks of River Murty and the vast grassland. Rhinos leisurely come to taste the salted soil below the tower, the gaurs or the Indian bison grazing at the distant meadow, spotted deer or a flock of hornbill flies away, the monkeys become very active on arrival of guest are the main attraction. Cultural shows are organized each evening only for the guest who books the room. Safaris are also arranged by them to Gorumara forest.

How to reach Dhupjhora: Dhupjhora can be reached by hiring cars from NJP (New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) or Siliguri or Bagdogra. First you have to reach Lataguri (75 kms from Siliguri) and then drive straight for 10 mins to reach the Rhino Crossing (Gondar More) where you would find a statue of a Rhino and the Checkpost for Dhupjhora Elephant Camp on the right. You have to verify your permit here and enter the Elephant Camp. The Dhupjhora Elephant Camp is located adjacent to the Gorumara forest with a tea garden as its backdrop. The Murti River is a 10 min walk from the camp skirting a way through the fringes of the forest and crossing a few streams. You can also reach Dhupjhora from New Mall Junction Station.

Raimatang is a small river in Western Buxa area in the Dooars area of West Bengal. There is a small village inside the forest known as Raimatang village. The village has gained prominence in tourism in the recent past.

Located on the river Raimatang in Dooars in Buxa Tiger Reserve, there is a small forest village called Raimatang village. Surrounded by forest , hills and river, Raimatang village has been a popular place for the nature loving people. Raimatang is not a so called tourist destination, as there is as such no tourists’ point to see. But a sojourn to the village from the hustle-bustle of the urban life and to enjoy the abundant natural beauty, Raimatang is getting its popularity.

This tourist center is amid hills, forests and tea gardens. To stay in the Forest Rest House means taking shelter in Nature’s lap. Alongside flowing the river Raimatang. Sitting on the verandah or on the lawn’s grass-carpet, you look at the blue hills which call you and you get lost within yourself.

What to see:

 There is a watch tower in Raimatang from where tourists can watch wild-life during morning time. Vast river bed is also an attractive place to spend some time in day light.

Raimatang is surrounded by Buxa Tiger Reserve and there are plenty of wild-life can be seen. Seeing elephant among the other wild-life is very frequent.

Adventurous tourists can enjoy to take the journey of the popular trek-route between Raimatang and Lepchakha through Buxa Tiger Reserve forest.

How to reach:

As for any destination in Western Dooars, if you are travelling by train, you should be getting down at Alipurduar (45 kms), you may also come to New Jalpaiguri (170 kms) which is the main point of tourist arrival in the region. Bagdogra is the nearest airport not far from New Jalpaiguri.

The Raidak River also called Wang Chhu or Wong Chhu in Bhutan is a tributary of the Brahmaputra River, and a trans-boundary river, flows through Bhutan. The Wang Chhu, or Raidak, rises in the Himalayas. In its upper reaches it is also known as the Thimphu Chhu. The main river is a rapid stream, running over a bed of large boulders.

The road leading to Raidak forest in North Bengal crisscrosses through densely carpeted tea gardens via Shamukkhola along side the swiftly flowing strong currents of the river Raidak. Amidst the lush green tea estates, you will come upon the settlements of the Rabha tribe. The forest shelters wild animal like the deer and elephants. A great number of birds such as lalmuniya, bulbul, tiya, shyam, koyal, phinge, etc., are found in abundance in this forest.

Places to See at Raidak:

 Raimatang:

Raimatang is a forest village. You have to travel through the river bed to reach here. The forest surrounding the village is famous for Elephants among other wild life. During the harvesting season, almost every night elephants come to the village during the night.

Bhutanghat:

Bhutan one side, India on the other. In between, runs the Raidak river. Many known and unknown trees on the hill and rapidly flowing river make it a dream-land. Elephants come here to drink water, and yu may see their bathing scene. During rains, the river is totally changed. A violent flow of water comes down from the hill. The tourist think that whatever may happen, we are not leaving this place. Then there is the sublime beauty of Pipingkhola. Bhuthanghat is about 45km. from Alipurduar. There is no place to stay at night. So must come back before night fall.

How to reach: 

Kanchankanya and Uttarbanga Express are the best options. Get down at Alipurduar. If you take the bus, get down at Dangi Bazar and trek 3 km. A car will take you directly to the forest resthouse.

Bhutanghat, 45 km from Alipurduar in West Bengal, is famous for its scenic beauty. Located near the border with Bhutan, this region is blessed by the river Raidak. Bhutanghat is a mountainous terrain, flanked by hills covered with abundant green forests. Bhutanghat is elephant country and is an attractive destination for wildlife lovers.

What to see:

There is a beautiful forest bungalow (built in 1904) overlooking the river. Bhutanghat as it often serves as an elephant corridor and is also known to be an extension of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. While it can be argued that there is nothing concrete to be seen here, it cannot denied that very few places offer natural scenic views as mesmerizingly as Bhutanghat. Wild animals such as deers, reptiles, elephants and even tigers are not rare in the region, and not to forget, the river Raidak itself makes way for exciting bird watching. Ideally, an idle day here would mean away from the crowds and amazing level of tranquility that takes the pleasure of being in jungles to an all new level.

How to reach:

By air: The nearest airport to Bhutanghat is Bagdogra, which is around 240-250kms away. All domestic airlines operate at the airport and it is well connected to Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Visitors can take car to the main city of SIliguri from Bagdogra, from where Bhutanghat is around 218 kms and can be reached by rail and road.

By train: The nearest railway station to Bhutanghat is Alipurduar, which is around 45kms away from the place. People coming to New Jalpaiguri Railway Station can choose to take a car or can travel with express and local trains to Alipurduar. From the main city of Alipurduar, there are plenty of rentals available for the main place of Bhutanghat.

Yuksom is a historical town in Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim district in the Northeast Indian state of Sikkim. It was the first capital of Sikkim established in 1642 AD by Phuntsog Namgyal who was the first Chogyal of Sikkim. This high altitude alpine trek passes through exquisite landscapes, dense Rhododendron forest. Dzongri or to Goechala at a height of 18,000 feet is a moderate trek and is mesmerizing. Yuksom literally means the meeting place of the three wise / superior ones.

On way to Yuksom, it is a place not to be missed by the tourists for its breathtaking beauty of a wild torrent of water cascading down granite rocks. It is an amazing sight and most visitors stop to marvel at this great symbiosis of sound and sight.

By Air – The closest air port is at Bagdogra, which is 175 kilometers from Yuksom and connected by Air with all important Indian metros. Bagdogra airport is well connected with the rest of India. There are daily flights to Delhi and Kolkata.

By Railway – The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri which is 180 kilometers from Yuksom. NJP is well connected with all major cities in India. New Jalpaiguri Station is well connected with the rest of India. Trains to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati, Bangalore, etc are regular.

By Road – Yuksom is 150 kilometers from the state capital Gangtok and about 170 kilometers from Siliguri. It is connected with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri by the national highway 31 A. Sikkim Nationalized Transport plies regular bus services between Gangtok and Pelling. Private buses, taxis and jeeps are also available.

Aritar a region in East Sikkim of India under Rongli Sub-Division, is known for its natural and landscaped beauty. It is located on the edge of the Himalayas, and can be reached in about four hours’ drive from Gangtok via either Pakyong or Rangpo.

Aritar Gumpa : A monastery of the Kagyuapa order,considered as one of the holiest and oldest in Sikkim. The visitor’s can imbibe the tranquil air with splendour of monastic arts reflected in its traditional architecture, carved & painted murals and treasure of manuscripts and icons.

 

Parbateyswar Shivalaya Mandir : The most venerated shrine with picturesque splendour is considered a very holy pilgrimage site, where thousands of devotees throng for the blessing and participate during the month of “SAWAN” to offer water and sip the sacred water from a sacred vessel.
