Situated in the Darjeeling Forest Division with a close proximity to Bagdogra Airport (20kms) and Siliguri Junction (10kms) the Mahananda is one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in North Bengal. Mahananda covers an area of more that 150 sq.km of continuous forest land and was started in 1955 as a game sanctuary mainly to protect Gaur or Indian Bison which was facing severe threat of extinction. The sanctuary shelters a large population of migratory elephant for a long period of time. The sanctuary has got a tremendous importance in the forest maps of India because of a considerable number of Bengal Tiger. Despite its small size the sanctuary holds atleast 14 majestic animals (according to 2003 census). Apart from these the faunal life of the Mahananda Sanctuary comprises of gaur, leopard, spotted deer, sloth bear, barking deer, wild dog, boar, sambar, along with smaller mammals like porcupine, pangolin, jungle cat, leopard cat, civet etc. recently some hullock gibbon and black capped languor have been released in the sanctuary and they can be seen living with the company of rhesus monkeys.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary nestled in the Dooars plain is a small but one of the oldest Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal. The name Chapramari probably derives from “Chopra” which means a type of fish and “Mari” which means abundant. The Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Nagrakata Block of Jalpaiguri District, just at the foothills of Kalimpong Sub-division and on the banks of Murti River. The Reserve Forest since 1895 was declared as a Game Sanctuary in 1939. In view of its great diversity of flora and fauna it was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1998.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

After crossing the main entrance gate of this sanctuary i.e, the Cheek Post of the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary travelers can witness the fascinating diversity of flora and fauna and the vast texture of the massive trees heltering varieties of orchids.

The watchtower is the best place to observe wild animals as they visit the salt pit near the water body prepared close to the watchtower.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its mega-herbivores such as the Elephant and the Gaur. Along with these, Cheetal, Sambar, Barking Deer, Wildboar, Pangolin are also present in the Sanctuary. It is significant in the international context for providing shelter and protection to various species of Wildlife included in the Red data Book (R.D.B) of the IUCN and the appendices of CITES. The Sanctuary provides an excellent opportunity for study of the habitat, behavior, food, population dynamics of these animals.

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is popular for its scenic beauty such as forested landscape w2ith its rive rain ecosystem which no one can forget. This Sanctuary is a paradise for birds such as Green Magpie, Indian Treepie, Thrush, Scarlet Minivet, Hill Mayna, Whitr Breasted Kingfisher, Hornbill, Large Grey Headed Fishing Eagle, Adjutant Stork etc. the most common water birds are the large and little Cormorant, Darter & Egret. Migratory birds include the Brahminy and Teals.

There is a single observation tower just in the front of the Glade in Chapramari. The tower provides a bird’s eye view of the glade and sighting of mega-herbivores like the Elephants and the Gaurs (Bison). Chapramari Watch Tower is situated on the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary just on the northern side of Gorumara National Park. Transport to go

By Road: National Highway No.31 between Siliguri and Guwahati passes over Chalsa and Lataguri and beside the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Buses, Mini Buses and Private Buses are available from Siliguri to Chalsa and Lataguri. Journey time is around 2 hours.

Way to Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary

By Rail: Nearest railway station is Chalsa. But all train is not arrived at Chalsa. New Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Siliguri Railway Station are main railway station in this area. You can change train from New Jalpaiguri or can follow the road journey from New Jalpaiguri to the park or from Siliguri to the park. It is better to access road journey after Siliguri or Jalpaiguri.

By Air: Nearest airport is Bagdogra. It is a domestic airport under Indian Army. All major air services are available from all over India. Distance between Bagdogra and Siliguri is 13 km. You can find out various vehicles to come in Siliguri, and then follow the above road route.

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a reserved forest area that initially started as a game sanctuary where children took rides. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a very beautiful and crazy forest in North Bengal. It is located on the foothills of the great Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division and can be reached from Siliguri in 30 minutes.

The list includes several species of babblers, wagtails, bee eaters, swallows, sun birds, rollers, robins, fly catchers, thrush, drongo, kites, eagles, hornbills, orioles, peacock, fouls, egrets, king fishers, wood pickers and much more.

The sanctuary is an ideal place for wildlife lovers. Several glades, hides and watchtowers have been created near natural saltlicks and streams to invite wild animals. The railway cabin in the abandoned Gulma Station inside the core area of the sanctuary has been converted into a watchtower.

Travelling to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

 By Road: Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by road with Darjeeling, Siliguri and other towns of North Bengal. Sukna is the gateway to the sanctuary which is located on the Siliguri-Darjeeling highway. It is just 13 Km from the Siliguri and 30 minutes drive distance from Siliguri.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri station, adjacent to Siliguri town. Most trains between New Delhi and Guwahati and Kolkata and Guwahati stop at New Jalpaiguri.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra(IXB), 16km from Siliguri. From NJP station or Bagdogra airport, rent a taxi to take you to Latpanchar bungalow. Do not travel in a small car. A sumo or similar car should be taken since the road, especially the last stretch, is bad.

There are no motorable roads. The vehicles can come up to the bungalow but no further. You have to walk along the forest trail. DO NOT walk along the trail without a guide since there are elephants, especially during winter time. The forest guards act as guides.

Buxa Tiger Reserve is situated in Alipurduar Sub-division of Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal. Buxa Tiger Reserve officials are planning to introduce car safaris and open new trekking and boating routes in the forest to attract more visitors in the coming tourist season starting from October.

This Tiger Reserve comprises the forest area of Rajabhatkhawa, Nimati, Barobisha, Rydak, Raimatang Jainti, Buxaduar and Bhutanghat. The main rivers are Sankosh, Raidak, Jayanti, Churnia, Turturi, Phashkhawa, Dima and Nonani. Buxa is rich with bio-diversity and has a great collection of rare orchids and medicinal plants.

Places to See at Buxa Tiger Reserve:

Rajabhatkhawa: Rajabhatkhawa is an ideal place to visit for those who are looking to experience nature and enjoy the wildlife and the lush green forests all around. The town is known for its beautiful landscape which is predominantly green owing to the thick forests which borders it from all sides. By Road:

The proper road connectivity of Alipurduar with nearby cities Darjeeling, Siliguri and various other North Bengal cities is a good option.

 

By Rail:

Alipurduar Junction / New Alipurduar in the nearest railway station at a distance of 17 Kilometers. Check for the trains as all not stop or arrive at this station. This area’s main railway station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station from where trains can be changed or road journey started to reach this place.

 

By Air:

Bagdogra is the nearest airport which is mainly a domestic one meant for the air force with limited operation for private airlines. This airport connects the area with the major Indian cities. Both Bagdogra and Siliguri cities are located at a distance of 13 kilometers. Many cab services are available from Siliguri to connect to the road route to reach here.

Jorpokhri is a tiny place on a hilltop and located in Darjeeling district. From Darjeeling town, it is about 19kms and can be reached from the road to Mirik. The presence of a couple of lakes in this area gave rise to the name of this place Jorpokhri. The lakes are the main attraction in this place and the view of Kanchenjunga through the pine forest in clear weather and also of the beautiful Darjeeling town. Being close to the Nepal border one can visit the Pashupati market there.

Nearby Attractions at Jorpokri: It is a wonderfully landscaped hilltop with the view of Darjeeling and Kurseong on one side and the entire Kanchendzonga range on the other side. The famous Darjeeling, Mirik and Lepchajagat are nearby, easily accessible if you hire a car. Other attractions are Sukhiapokhri, Pashupati Nath Market, Kurseong, Simana, Senchal Forest Area and the Tea Gardens all along.

Things to do at Jorepokhri: Enjoy the views of Mt. Kanchenjunga, enjoy the adjacent forests and trip to Mirik and Darjeeling. You can also drop at Pashupati Nath market of Nepal. You can also feed the geese swimming in the pokhri.

Pashupati Nath Market located on the India Nepal border. Shree Pashupatinath Temple is a Hindu temple located on the shore of the Bagmati River on the eastern part of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. There is also a large market in the streets surrounding the temple.

How to reach Jorpokhri: Jorpokhri is about 19 kms from Darjeeling town center. From Ghoom take the road to Sukhiapokhri that leads all the way to Mirik. Sukhiapokhri is about 11kms from Ghoom and Jorpokhri is another 2kms from there. You will need to book a car from Darjeeling taxi stand and it takes little over 1 hour by road. From Mirik it takes about 1 hour drive to reach Jorpokhri via the Pashupati Nath Market located on the India Nepal border. From Siliguri, distance to Jorpokhri is 85kms.

Best time to visit Jorpokri: October to March if you are seeking beautiful views of Mt. Kanchenjungha June – August (Rainy Season) if you want to share a glimpse of the Himalayan Salamanders.

Bindu is only 107 km from Siliguri. The last hamlet of West Bengal, Bindu is a valley encircled with hills of Bhutan and India on the banks of river Jaldhaka.

Bindu, famous for its cardamom plantation, is also coming up as a popular offbeat tourist destination in Dooars Himalayan foothills. Buxa Tiger Reserve lies in Alipurduar sub-division of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Its northern boundary runs along the international border with Bhutan. The Sinchula hill range lies all along the northern side of BTR and the Eastern boundary touches that of the Assam State. National Highway No.31 C roughly runs along its southern boundary. It is the eastern most extension of extreme bio-diverse North-East India & represents highly endemic Indo-Malayan region. The fragile “Terai Eco-System” constitutes a part of this Reserve. The Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary of Bhutan is contiguous to North of Buxa Tiger Reserve. It is a natural international corridor for elephant migration between India and Bhutan. You can also find a vast array of avian species like Goosanders, Ibis Bill, Fork-tails, Red-stars, Wag-tails, Common Teal, Gargani Teal, Large Whistling Teal, White Eyed Poachared and Hornbills. By Road : The headquarters of the park, Alipurduar is located 175 kms from Siliguri, West Bengal. NH 31 is the main highway. There are two buses to the entry point Jayanti ( 30km) via Buxa from Alipurduar. One has to get down at Santlabari for the trek to Buxa. One can also hire cars from Alipurduar to reach these entry points. Rajabhatkhawa is 12km from Jayanthi.
