Malbazar

Malbazar is also known as Mal. Now this is a sub-divisional town, having its own municipality in Jalpaiguri district, Located in Northern part of the State of West Bengal. It is about 65 km from Jalpaiguri town. For its positional advantage Malbazar is gaining its tourist attraction day by day. Before 1947 Malbazar was a very small place, mainly known for its tea gardens mostly owned by British people. Those tea gardens had a few Bengali white collar employees and the work force consisted of tribal people. Actually in yester years this place was a market for the Tea Garden workers and Planters surrounding to this place. The word Mal means Goods and Bazar means Market.

Teesta River

On your way to Malbazar, beautiful Teesta River which has a peculiar feature of changing colors every season will stay beside you. The town of Malbazar has a beautiful tea garden of Raja Tea Estate and a nice Mal Park. Malbazar can also be used as a base to visit nearby forests like Gorumara, Chapramari, Chukchukia and others. You can also make day trips to Jhalong, Bindu, Paren and other nearby destinations from here. On your way to Malbazar, you will cross a few forests and come across the famous Sevokeshwari temple and Coronation Bridge.

Nearby attractions from Malbazar:

Malbazar is the most important town in Western Dooars area. All the tourist destinations of Western Dooars can be accessed from Malbazar within a drive of an hour or less. The town itself does not offer many tourist attractions.

River Teesta

Mongpong overlooking River Teesta and Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary located on Sevoke Road falls en route to Malbazar. Beside, there are various forests like Chapramari, Gorumara, Chalsa, Khunia and Chukchikia located all around Malbazar. Other nearby places of attraction includes Jhalong located on the banks of Jaldhaka River and Bindu near the Indo-Bhutan border. The twin villages of Suntaleykhola and Samsing perched within dense greenery on the banks of rivulets can also be visited on day trips from Malbazar. You can also arrange a picnic on the banks of River Murti.

How to reach Malbazar:

If you are traveling from Kolkata, you need to board the Kanchankanya Express from Sealdah and reach New Mal Junction station. This train departs from Sealdah on daily basis. You can also reach New Jalpaiguri station from where, you can board a car or a bus to reach Malbazar.

Rocky Island is a new tourist destination in Dooars. Situated on the banks of the River Murti is about 2 km from Samsing and is a popular camping site. Murti River flows through the destination. The place is surrounded by hills and ideal for land base adventure activities like trekking, rock climbing & rappelling. The campsite provides an excellent opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity and its abundant avifauna of the lower part of Neora Valley National Sanctuary.

The place is adorned with the views of massive large rocks like Neel kanta, Pathar Kailas, Bhimsen, Hansdunga etc provides easy climbing practice for everyone with riverside cave to complete the adventure. A small enjoyable trek to nearby spots like Sherpagaon, Bhalukope, Jhandidara and Mo-chuki is an added attraction of this place.

Place to Visit From Rocky Island…

 

 

Samsing: Situated at an elevation of 3000ft, Samsing is a nice cool shady place, ideal for nature lovers. This is about 2 km from Rocky Island. If you want to savor the beauty of an exotic natural surrounding in an untouched rural corner of the Darjeeling District of West Bengal, the pristine hill village of Samsing amidst forests and tea gardens will be your ideal destination.

Suntalekhola:

Suntalekholais about four kilometers further up the road from Samsing. Suntalekhola is a nice place to visit if you are in Dooars. The green patch on the left side of the way to Suntalekhola is amazing and holds many rarities of birds and butterflies.

 Neora Valley National Park: The Neora Valley National Park covers a total area of virgin forest, rich in biodiversity located in the Eastern Himalayas. Its floral diversity is noteworthy with mixed species of rhododendrons, bamboo, sal etc.

How to Reach: Nearest Airport: Bagdogra Nearest Rail Station: Malbazar, NJP Nearest Road: NH31 Samsing is located at a distance of 82 km. from Siliguri and it takes around 3 hours to reach from Siliguri. The journey to Samsing is truly admirable, as you gradually drive uphill through the scenic Dooars tea garden on the rolling hilly slopes. However, it is better for tourists from Kolkata to get down at New Mall Junction which is only 19 kms from Samsing. Cars can be hired from New Mall Junction for Samsing.

Namchi is situated at an altitude of 1,675 m above sea level. It is situated at a distance of 92 km from the state capital Gangtok and 90 km from the town of Siliguri. Namchi offers an unmatched view of the Khangchendzonga range and the Rangit valley. Historical facts state that the entire state of Sikkim was once under the reign of the Chogyals. In addition, it is also believed that the Chogyals were the main emperors of Sikkim as well as Ladakh. The town offers quite a lot of places of attraction to look out for. Besides, you can also go out for trekking and discover the most exquisite beauty of nature.

 

 

Here you can visit the Sherdup Choeling Monastery and the Dichen Choeling monastery. Around two kms from Namchi is the old Ngadak monastery which is now being renovated. Situated on a hill just above Ngadak monastery is the very attractive Rock Garden, which is full of rare flowers and plants and also offers breathtakingly beautiful views.

 

Places to Visit at Namchi:

 

 

Char Dham: Char Dham is a pilgrimage destination situated at Solophok Hill, which is at a distance of about 5 km from Namchi Town. It is believed that during the Kurukshetra war between the Kauravas and Pandavas, this place was where Arjuna worshipped Lord Shiva.

 

 

Tendong Hill: The Tendong Hill is located at an altitude of 8530 ft above sea level. The hill is a popular trekking destination of Sikkim. The view from the top of the Tendong Hill is something to be cherished and enjoyed as it spans across plains of Bengal to the majestic heights of the Himalayan Ranges.

 

Best time to visit Namchi: You can visit Namchi anytime of the year. The best time to explore Namchi is during the summer season, which extends from the month of March to June.

 

How to reach Namchi: Namchi is located some 90 km from New Jalpaiguri, so the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri Station. But if you go by plane, then the nearest airport is Bagdogra which is about 96 km from Namchi.

The word Dooars means the “Door”. The name may be given Dooars as it is the entry point or the door to enter Bhutan. Situated at the foothill of eastern Himalayas Dooras is well known for its tremendous natural Beauty. The whole Region is rich with lush green tea gardens and the flowing river like Jaldhaka, Torsha, Sankosh, Dyna, Karatowa make the land fertile enough. Each of the places like Jhalong, Suntaley Khola, Samsing, Chapramari, Rocky Island, Today, Parren, Tangtey, Chilapata, Buxa have its own set of features attracting the tourist. Toto Para is one such settlement. One can also visit Toto Para, a tribe on the verge of distinction a decade ago. There are some of the forest watch tower worth visiting like Jatraprasad, Chuk Chuki, Chandrachur Tower, Rhino Point, Chapramari tower etc. Safari are also entertaining along ith Tribal dance which can be arranged on prior notice. Totopara: Totopara is a small village on the bank of River Torsha near Bhutan border, famous for the Dooars aboriginals – the Totos.Located 89° 20’E and 26° 50’N in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India. This village is home to the unique Toto tribe that is one of a kind in the world. The village is about 22 km from Madarihat, which is the entry point of the famous Jaldapara National Park.

 

 

Toto People: Toto people belong in Indo-Bhutanese tribal community. It is a very primitive inhabitance, considered as Mongoloid people. Now a days all Toto people concentrate in Totopara, 22 kilometers away from Madarihat, Jajpaiguri District. They have flat nose, small eye, broad and square cheeks, thick lips and black iris.

 

You do not found the tribal Toto anywhere in the world except at Totopara in Dooars. If you want to take a test on the old tribal culture, then Totopara is one of the best tourist spot for you. Toto people belong in Indo-Bhutanese tribal community. Till now there life-style remain nearly traditional.

South Raidak forest range was established around 1900 and the resthouse was constructed in 1909, making it one of the oldest forest resthouses in India. Standing on its balcony, Marvelling that the house was almost a century old yet as sturdy and spotless as a knight’s shining armour. Flowing through deep forests, rivers Shuknajhora, Tandajhora. Baghjhora and Dhawlajhora. In the Forest Rest House you can feel the beauty of the sleeping forests. You can see the Chhipra forest and Nararthalibeel. On the Watch Tower the mind goes back to the golden childhood days.

 

 

 

 

This range is one of the most important elephant corridors of the Buxa reserve. Covering an area of 5,660.45 hectare, it is home to elephant, leopard, hyena, Himalayan Black Bear, fishing cat, jackal, wild dog, boar, wild pig, pangolin, porcupine and different species of deer. It is a haven for avi-fauna, housing hundreds of resident and migratory birds like the Great Indian Pied Hornbill, jungle mynah, red jungle fowl, woodpecker, nightjar, Moonal Pheasant, Grey Heron, various kinds of teal, duck, peacock and egret. Among reptiles, the Raidak forest range is home to the Indian Rock Python, banded krait, King Cobra, Russell’s viper and many other varieties.

Bhutan Ghat: Bhutan one side, India on the other. In between, runs the Raidak river. Many known and unknown trees on the hill and rapidly flowing river make it a dream-land. Elephants come here to drink water, and yu may see their bathing scene. During rains, the river is totally changed. A violent flow of water comes down from the hill. The tourist think that whatever may happen, we are not leaving this place. Then there is the sublime beauty of Pipingkhola. Bhuthanghat is about 45km. from Alipurduar.

 

 

 

Buxa Tiger Reserve: Buxa Tiger Reserve Forests lies in Alipurduar sub-division of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. The name “Buxa Tiger” has been derived from Buxa Fort, which once was used for detainees during freedom movement of India. The name “Buxa Tiger” has been derived from Buxa Fort – a fort at an altitude of 867 meters on the Sinchula Range guarding the most important of the eleven routes into Bhutan, which once was used for detainees during freedom movement of India.

 

How to Reach:

 

3141 Tista-Torsa Express leaves at 1:35 p.m. daily from Sealdah station and arrives at Alipurduar next evening at 7:15 p.m.

 

3149 Kanchankanya Express weekly (Tue, Thur, Fri & Sun), leaves from Sealdah at 7:35 p.m. and arrives at Alipurduar next day at 11:10 a.m.

 

5959 Kamrup Express leaves from Horwah Station at 5:35 p.m. and arrives at Alipurduar next morning at 9:15 a.m.

 

5657 Kanchanjunga Express leaves from Sealdah Station at 6:45 a.m. and arrives at Alipurduar same evening at 9.50 p.m.

 

From Alipurduar station, a hired car will take you directly to Raidak Forest.
